The traffic situation in the country has gone from worse to worst. Traveling daily going to work has become such a burden especially to those who live far from their respective place of work. They have to wake up in the wee hours of the morning and get back home very late. Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said that to arrive at the office or school early, one has to wake up very early. Many people reacted negatively because of his comment. They said that it’s hard to wake up very early and decreasing hours of sleep is not good for the health.

According to a study done by psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa, late sleepers and risers are more intelligent and alert than people who sleep and wake up early. During his research, he had 20,745 high school students and 52 middle schoolers as subjects. They were interviewed in their respective houses and were made to answer intelligence test. After five years, he called 15,197 of them and asked about their hours of sleep. The ones who got higher grades on the intelligence test were the ones that sleep and wake up late. The test covered education, religion, and history of culture and tradition.

The study was also done at the University of Liege, Belgium. The subjects were 15 night owls and 16 early birds. The brain activities of the students were measured 1 ½ and 10 ½ hours after waking up. It revealed that the alertness of the late sleepers and early risers 1 ½ hours after waking up are almost the same. But the alertness of the same subjects 10 ½ hours after waking up showed that the night owls are more alert and active. The reaction time of those who wake up late are also faster than the early risers. However, experts still advised that people should follow the proper sleeping hours and avoid sleeping late because this will have a bad effect on the immune system and will weaken the resistance of the body against diseases.
